Herbs that Fight Acne

Friday, June 25th, 2010

A number of herbs today are used in special formulas to clear skin problems. They provide different benefits to acne sufferers, as well as to people who experience other blemishes such as whiteheads or blackheads.

These herbs benefit an acne-prone person either directly or indirectly (dealing with the root of the problem or clearing the surface):

Thyme-Facial steam packs often are made with this pleasant-smelling herb. It is known to clear the complexion quite well. It might be mixed along with other ingredients such as basil or rose water.

Basil-This herb often is found in tea and also is included in many facial masks or treatment pastes. Its strongest suit is its ability to fight against acne-causing agents. You might see it in a home recipe along with lemon, thyme, tea tree, or witch hazel.

Tea tree-This herb is most often used as an oil. It’s main role is to cleanse and toning the skin. It has healing/antiseptic qualities that keeps acne away.

Turmeric-This root has antiseptic and antibiotic qualities. It serves the skin quite well, as it addresses the root of the problem-the acne fighting bacteria. It also helps eliminate redness, soreness, and pimples.

Burdock-This herb helps strengthen the immune system and promotes blood purification. It also provides a way to detoxify the body and one result is less chance that skin blemishes such as pimples or blackheads would form.

Rooibos-This herb has anti-oxidant qualities. Therefore, it is esteemed as a product that helps build up the immune system. It also soothes and heals the skin, which allows for the correction and disappearance of blemishes.

Heather-The young version of this flower is often added to teas. It has forever been applied as a way to clear skin problems. If you see it on a label as part of a product ingredient list you can be assured it is very helpful.

Acne Prevention Tips: How to Take Care of your Skin

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Acne products can help you clear up your skin. However, you should also learn how to take care of it so the problem does not return.

There is no guarantee that if you adhere to tips presented in this article that your acne problem will never return. However, it should greatly reduce the chance that it will.

Keeping your Skin Acne Free

Keeping you skin acne free does not happen by accident. It takes careful thought and planning. Some of the best advice I heard about keeping your skin clean includes the following:

  • Use makeup, lotion, and cleansers that is appropriate for your skin type. Otherwise, you could strip the natural oils from your skin and dry it out, or you could clog your pores. Either way, pimples or other blemishes are likely to appear.
  • Make sure you do not cut yourself while shaving, especially near a pimple. This could cause further infection. Likewise, never pop a zit as much as you want to, and do not touch them especially with dirty hands. (Okay, I confess this is a very bad habit!)
  • Make sure you know what is in the skin products you are purchasing. Beware that some cheap or poorly made cleansers, for instance, are made with terribly harsh ingredients. These can strip your skin from its natural protective sealant.
  • Clean your skin every single night before you go to bed. This will keep your pillow clean and will result in less chance of dirt and buildup, which often occurs during the night. You should of course also do the same in the morning.
  • Limit sun exposure as well as tanning. You may think this will help you cover it up, or get rid of it. However, sometimes it only makes the situation worse.
  • Watch your diet. Specifically, limit the amount of sugary and salty foods that you eat. Fattening foods as well as substance such as alcohol and caffeine can cause a problem too.

Shopping Tips

Instead of wasting time on treatments that do not work, make sure you do your research. Consumer reviews say volumes about what works and what does not work. Lab studies have the same weight, so study them carefully.

However, beware of fake reviews posted online, which favor one product over another. Try to find as unbiased of information as you can. This will help you make an educated decision without becoming enticed by advertisement hype.
