Benzoyl Peroxide: Benefits, Side Effects and Precaution

Benzoyl Peroxide is a powerful bleaching agent. It is available under so many of brand names, like; Benoxyl, Benzac AC, Benzac W, Benzagel, Brevoxyl, Desquam, Fostex, Persa-Gel, Triaz, Vanoxide and Zoderm. All forms of Benzoyl Peroxide are useful in treating mild to moderate cases of acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide and Acne

Benzoyl Peroxide is used as a contemporary on the affected area only. While applying, ensure that the chemical should not with your eyes, nose or mouth or any part of skin that is inflamed or damage. Contact with any of these areas will cause further irritation. You can definitely prefer using a liquid wash or bar soap version of Benzoyl Peroxide once or twice a day in place of your regular soap. Before using medication, you wet your skin properly, gently work up lather, and subsequently rinse thoroughly. You should not scrub the skin under any of the circumstances.

Benzoyl Peroxide in the form of creams, lotions or gels is typically applied to the effected area once or twice a day. Before applying a liberal dose on the effected area, you should gently wash the area with a mild cleanser and pat dry. Then add a small amount of the medicine and rub it in gently.

Benzoyl Peroxide also comes in the form of pads. As with the creams, you should wash the affected area with a mild cleanser and dry the affected area. Then you apply the pad once or twice a day as directed by your physician.

Sometimes, benzoyl peroxide causes excessive dryness, if this is the case with you, reduce amount of medicine, while applying. Although, it is best to consult your doctor for further details and instructions if any side effects are noticed.

When working with the cleansers gently rub them into the skin for 15 to 20 seconds as you work it to a full lather and subsequently rinse thoroughly. If you have excessive, drying you can also raise the cleanser off sooner or employ it less. However, as with the medicine, it is best to consult your physician first, before doing anything.

Negative Impact of Benzoyl Peroxide

Sometimes benzoyl peroxide leaves negative impact on your skin. The major side effect of benzoyl peroxide includes a slight stinging, dryness or peeling. If these conditions actively persist or deteriorate then you should tell your doctor.

In case, you notice redness, irritation, scaly eruptions or a rash then consult your doctor immediately. The side effects mentioned above are limited, there may be many. If you feel any sort of problem using benzoyl peroxide, then this may be side effects of medication. In such circumstances, consult your physician.

Precautions in Using Benzoyl Peroxide

This will be best for you to notify your physician if you are allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide or if you have any other allergies before using it. This medication has bleaching properties and known to bleach hair and colored fabric. Use it cautiously to prevent contact.

There is a possibility that you will become extra sensitive to the sun when using this product so you should avoid extensive sun exposure, tanning booths or sunlamps. When you go outdoors, you should wear a sunscreen and wear protective clothing.

You should also not use this medicine when you are pregnant and you should discuss the potential risks with your doctor since it can be excreted in the breast milk.

Drug Interactions

Notify your doctor about all medicines you are taking, both prescription and nonprescription. If you are taking other skin medicines, you should notify your doctor before starting or stopping any of your medicines.
