Acne Help (Home) > Acne Basics > Stress and Acne Stress Causes AcneMost teenagers know - that stress causes acne outbreaks. When your body is under stress, it naturally produces a substance called "corticotropin-releasing hormone", or CRH. This hormone does a number of things to get your body ready to "face the stress". It's released from your skin glands, and as one of its tasks it causes oils there to also be released. This could be because human bodies evolved to need that oil to protect the skin in times of stress, or to help cool it. That oil tries to leave the glands, and on a face not prone to acne it would just flow across the skin and evaporate or be washed away. However, if the face is dirty and has dirt trapped at the top of the pores, or if the oil tends to coagulate and block the pores, the result is that the oil being produced has nowhere to go and formes the acne. While keeping the skin healthy and clean so it can naturally let the oil flow out helps, not having the oil produced in the first place is also key. This is usually really difficult for the average teenager, dealing with all of the problems of school, friends, parents, family, and life in general. Still, it is key for a teenager to find coping mechanisms, to learn to deal healthily with the stress, and not to let the stress get to him or her. Otherwise the body reacts to that stress, which tends to only make things worse!
